Fireside: 5 Simple Words

“Yet in the church I had rather speak 5 words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than 10,000 words in an unknown tongue.”

1 Corinthians 14:19

No amount of practice can replace the supernatural wisdom it takes to condense substance into a single sentence. Anybody can teach with many words. Spiritual wisdom is required to make truth simple.

What can you have in 5 but not in 10,000?

A scientist trying to explain the science of evolution is like a politician making promises. They both are senseless masses of words and letters piled on top of each other expected to be ‘meaningful’. The Bible is beautiful because it is just what God wanted to say, clear and concise.

The Bible says, “And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:” (1 Corinthians 2:4) “Enticing words” is salesman talk. They wear you down with so much babbling until you buy what they’re selling for peace and quiet!

More dangerous than that, is “In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin:”(Proverbs 10:19) Bob Jones Sr. used to say, “Simplicity is truth’s most becoming garb.” When you begin to see a large thesis to prove a point, watch out! Self-proclaimed sages think they will be heard for their much speaking. The Bible disagrees: “but he that refraineth his lips is wise.”

Our apostle, Paul, echoes the sentiment of Solomon in this passage. What is the value in five short, simple words? Here are some thoughts, Biblical and otherwise, that say volumes in just a phrase.
