“Son of man, write thee the name of the day, even of this same day: the king of Babylon set himself against Jerusalem this same day.”
Ezekiel 24:2
This day brought events that Ezekiel had not planned on.
At the break of each new day, we have a set idea of how we will lie down when night falls. We strive to attain what we hope for; to avoid what we fear most. Men of character make their bed in the morning, with the aspiration that no matter how violent the day becomes, the order, preparation, and expectancy of a made bed will settle. But man is not the master of his own destiny, and many will not make it back the bed they made.
“Go to now, ye that say, Today or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:
Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.”
James 4:13-14
No, God names the day by what He puts in it. That may mean the onset of an invasion; or it could mean the last afternoon with a loved one. We cannot know what a day may hold.
But we can know Who holds the day.
Let us name our days by how we look to Him, no matter what comes. Looking to our Lord, as Ezekiel did, we may rest in three sureties, as I see them:
The Surety of Certainty
You could study, plan, analyze and forecast your day only to be completely wrong. Times change. “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” (Hebrews 13:8) Study the Book of God to know the Son of God. Rather than uncertainty, you can know Him. Paul wrote a great promise of certainty in 2 Timothy 1:12b, “For I know whom I have believed.”
The Surety of Control
Our limited scope fails to grasp the enormous variables in each day. We can barely manage our own schedule, let alone the schedules of everyone who may intersect our path. Panic overtakes the commanding personality when they realize how truly powerless they are. Jesus Christ exerted almighty control when He promised the thief: “To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:43)
The Surety of Consecration
Boundless possibilities exist in a day named by the Lord and for the Lord. A believer may rejoice in such a day. “This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24) A believer may earn rewards through that day. “Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it,” (1 Corinthians 3:13a)
How can the Christian weather the turbulent times?
The assurance for a believer comes when he stops his scheming. The self-motivated man ‘speaks into existence’ things that never come to fruition. Man can only manifest his sinful nature in colorful ways. God alone can produce holiness; He names the day. A Christian should steer away from self-help, and look to “my help cometh from the LORD which made heaven and earth.” (Psalm 121:2)
“For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.
But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.”
James 4:15-16
